Latest Story

New scaffolding is being erected around the tower before work begins on the latest repair efforts.

Many of our parishioners and Friends were aware of the scaffolding along the south wall and extensive repairs which were carried out to the Chancel parapet.
The main contractors, Sapcotes, removed all the parapet stonework and transported each piece back to their workshop in Birmingham for the stonemasons to cut the new blocks to pattern.

Work on the parapet.
Removal of the stone was a slow and laborious operation as each stone had to be lifted, numbered, and then lowered to the ground. This allowed a partial inspection of the roof and timber gutters along the south wall to be made. This exposure revealed extensive attack by Death Watch Beetle, including the lava grub of the Death Watch along with decay in the timbers. Further opening up works were required to reveal the full extent of the insect infestation and timber decay.
To facilitate this work, scaffolding was placed full height along the inside of the Chancel.
Exposure had already revealed extensive attack by Death watch Beetle.
Once further inspections have been carried out, we will know the full extent of timber repairs needed. What is known, however, is that considerable extra costs are to be incurred in the repair and treatment of the timbers.
For visitors to Holy Trinity, why not have a chat with Nigel Penn, our Verger (and resident photographer). With 26 years as a Timber Preservation Surveyor, he will be pleased to talk to anyone about he project and his interest in all maters associated with insects, dampness and timber decay.
Considerable extra costs were incurred in the repair and treatment of the timbers.
Chancel Restoration
(South Parapet)
Through the generosity of all our Members and from the many donations received, work on the Chancel South Parapet progressed at a tremendous pace and was completed by the end of January 2005 with the fitting of the new Chancel Cross. Many of the parapet stones have been repaired or replaced. New grotesques have been carved and are now being put in place.
The timber work in this area has now been treated for the Death Watch Beetle infestation, allowing the internal scaffolding to be removed.

The finishing touches arrive. The new grotesques replaced the old and damaged ones that had to be removed.

The grotesque finally in position. Hopefully this piece of stone work will look out over the changing scene of Stratford-upon-Avon for several hundred years to come.
